WHAT IS BOD & COD
The organic components of the waste consist mainly of proteins, hydrocarbons, lipids and surfactants in proportions,
40-60% proteins, 25-50% hydrocarbons, 10% lipids
However, the measurement of organic ingredients becomes practically impossible due to their complexity. The term “BOD” or “COD” denotes the polluting load of the organic ingredients.
More specifically,
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
It expresses the amount of oxygen needed by the microorganisms found in the active sludge to oxidize the organic constituents of the nitrite and nitrate waste under aerobic conditions.
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
It is the amount of oxygen needed to completely oxidize the organic components of the waste to carbon dioxide and water in acidic conditions.
